Winter Gardens Blur the Lines Between Shoegaze and Post-Punk on ‘Uncomfortable/Unlovable’
Brighton’s Winter Gardens have spent the past few years honing a sound that refuses to be boxed in, and on March 26 via Austerity Records, they unveil their new EP, ‘Uncomfortable/Unlovable’—a dense, immersive listen that’s shimmering yet propulsive, ethereal yet razor-sharp.
Fronted by the dual-vocal dynamic of Ananda Howard and Jasmine Ardleys, Winter Gardens weave ghostly harmonies through walls of effects-drenched guitars, electronics, and rhythms. There’s a cinematic quality to their approach…melancholic but grand, like Slowdive covering Siouxsie and the Banshees in a neon-lit cathedral.
Produced by Luke Marsden and mastered by Andy Miles at Star Delta, ‘Uncomfortable/Unlovable’ finds the band pushing their sonic textures into even deeper, darker waters. The title alone hints at the tension in their songwriting…vulnerability meets defiance, soft-focus beauty collides with jagged post-punk edges. It’s music that feels just as at home in a smoky underground club as it would reverberating through an open-air festival stage at dusk.
Winter Gardens have already earned their stripes supporting legends like Echo & The Bunnymen, Gary Numan, and Modern English, not to mention their recent festival slots at Rockaway Beach and Left of the Dial.
